Senior Pets

The health of your pet can change quickly as he or she ages and changes can go unnoticed. Small dog breeds and cats enter their senior years from 7 years of age while large breed dogs enter their senior years from the age of 5.

Often pets begin to develop diseases common to their human counterparts, such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Early detection is essential to assist in disease prevention, reduce suffering and greatly prolong lifespan.

A regular senior check up including blood and dental checks are essential to detect these problems early.

Signs to watch out for when your pet enters the senior years:

  • Interacting less with family members
  • Responding less often or less enthusiastically
  • Having difficulty climbing stairs
  • Increased stiffness or limping
  • Increase in drinking
  • Urinating more often
  • Changes in weight gain or loss
  • Changes in coat condition or skin
  • New lumps or bumps
  • Confusion or disoriented
  • Losing housetraining habits

If your pet is showing any of the above signs be sure to phone for an appointment
